We’ve long been told that high cholesterol may be an indicator for heart disease
Despite mounting evidence with regard to their side effects, statins are still one of the UK’s most highly prescribed medications. Natural approaches to lower cholesterol without side effects may just be the answer…
Lecithin – usually derived from soya (sunflower lecithin is also available), lecithin is an emulsifyer, binding to cholesterol and helping to transport it out of the body.
Phytosterols – these plant compounds are most familiar to us in the chilled section of the supermarket. Added in small levels to dairy products to help beat cholesterol, plant sterols are a natural way to lower levels of LDL (the bad type of cholesterol) and improve levels of HDL (the good cholesterol) in the blood.
Change your diet – Whilst some foods such as eggs and kidney beans are naturally high in cholesterol, it is saturated fats that actually increase our blood cholesterol, not eating eggs! Reduce the amount of saturated fats and animal fats from meat and dairy and avoid high fat, processed foods. Opt for wholegrains when it comes to pasta, bread and rice and eat those greens!
Cynara – Globe artichokes (cynara scolymus) are a brilliant bitter vegetable which are excellent when it comes to improving fat metabolism and reducing cholesterol. If the idea of eating these bitter vegetables every day is a step too far, try taking it as a supplement – simply add 15 droips to a little water 2-3 times daily and drink.
Know your cholesterol – this might seem like an odd tip, but most people only ever find out their total cholesterol level. Make sure you ask for the breakdown of good (HDL) and bad (LDL) cholesterol. You may have a high total level but if it’s 80% good stuff then you need to know!
CoQ10 – If you do take a statin tablet, make sure you’re taking CoQ10 too. Our production of this nutrient is inhibited by statins and as CoQ10 is a vital nutrient for heart health, energy and even gum health it’s essential to take 100mg daily alongside statin medication.
